Meet Our Tutor Time Staff – Ms. Charletta, VPK Teacher

Meet Ms. Charletta, VPK teacher at Tutor Time in Jacksonville, FL! She has been at Tutor Time for about three years, but has a wealth of experience teaching across the country. Read on to learn about this fabulous member of our team!

Why did you choose a career in early education?

I always wanted to be a teacher. At my high school, we had an education program, so we would do the education portion at the school, and then we would leave for half a day and go to a daycare and work there. I just really liked it.

Tell us some more about your teaching background.

My husband is retired military, so I’ve worked all over the country. I have an Associate of Arts and Sciences in children’s education. I’ve taught at private schools, I’ve taught kindergarten and first grade, I worked at a church daycare. I did also work in private daycares in Hawaii and Texas, and I worked as a substitute teacher in Louisiana for several years.

What do you like most about teaching VPK?

I just love coming to school and seeing all the smiles I get. The kids just make you feel good, they say, “You’re the best teacher,” or “You’re so nice.” I also have great parents. My parents are nice and they treat me well.

Could you share some examples of activities you do in your class?

Today, we did a number recognition activity where we had to make umbrellas and the umbrellas each had numbers on them. We also had raindrops cut out to go with the activity. Students had to pick the umbrella with the number they wanted, and they had to go and put that number of raindrops on it. We do a lot of writing in our classroom and we will use materials like ribbon to create our names, or to make patterns.

What activities do you like to do when you’re not at work?

I have five grandchildren, so I like to spend time with them. We go to the zoo, we read books, we make cookies, we bake, we make slime.

What has been your biggest accomplishment since you’ve been at Tutor Time?

When a child comes in in the morning and they’re sad and don’t want their parents to leave, my proudest accomplishment is building a relationship with them and being able to show them that when their parents leave, they can get a hug from me. I make them feel better.
